About the Community Planning Group
The Philadelphia CPG is responsible for reviewing and using key data to establish prevention priorities and, based on these priorities, developing a Comprehensive HIV Prevention Plan. In addition to collaborating with the health department in reviewing and finalizing key community planning activities, the planning body also reviews the health department’s application for federal HIV prevention funding to ensure that it is concurrent with the prevention plan. The CPG does not allocate resources. The primary purpose of the CPG is to develop the Comprehensive HIV Prevention Plan that designates priority populations and the activities or interventions that will target HIV prevention needs in the city. To this end, the CPG regularly reviews available information on high-risk populations and prevention programs, using documents such as the Epidemiologic Profile. The planning body prioritizes target populations and chooses prevention activities/interventions based on their ability to prevent as many new infections as possible.
Philadelphia is one of six cities that are directly funded for community prevention planning purposes. While most CPGs operate on a state level, the prevention planning in Philadelphia, New York, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles and San Francisco is directly funded due to the size and scope of the HIV epidemic in these cities.
