About the Prevention Planning Group
The Philadelphia Prevention Planning Group (PPG) reviews and uses key data to establish prevention priorities as well as a Comprehensive HIV Prevention Plan based on these priorities. In addition to collaborating with the health department in reviewing and finalizing key community planning activities, the PPG also reviews the health department’s application for federal HIV prevention funding to ensure that it is concurrent with the prevention plan. The PPG does not allocate resources.
The primary purpose of the PPG is to develop the Comprehensive HIV Prevention Plan that designates priority populations and the activities or interventions that will target HIV prevention needs in the city. The PPG regularly reviews available information on high-risk populations and prevention programs, using documents such as the Epidemiologic Profile. The PPG prioritizes target populations and chooses prevention activities/ interventions based on their ability to prevent as many new infections as possible.
Philadelphia is one of six cities that are directly funded for community prevention planning purposes. While most PPGs operate on a state level, prevention planning in Philadelphia, New York, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles and San Francisco is directly funded due to the size and scope of the HIV epidemic in these cities.
The Philadelphia Prevention Planning Group meets on the fourth Wednesday of the month from 2:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. Please see the calendar for upcoming meeting information.
